Derrick Van Orden, Republican U.S. Representative for Wisconsin’s 3rd District, said he supported a short-term continuation of Affordable Care Act subsidies to prevent coverage disruptions, while advocating for longer-term solutions that lower costs and expand insurance choices.
“i have long opposed the damage the unaffordable care act has done to our country, but i will not watch wisconsinites lose health care because democrats let their own law collapse,” said Derrick Francis Van Orden, U.S. Representative from Wisconsin. “today’s vote was a temporary off-ramp. in december, i voted for the real solution, the lower health care premiums for all americans act which will lower costs, expand choice, strengthen employer coverage, and cut premiums for families and small businesses. this is an absolute democratic problem.”
According to Van Orden’s post on X, he shared his views on healthcare policies, including a video of his statements following congressional action. He reiterated his longstanding disagreement with current frameworks and his preference for alternative legislation. This stance has generated responses regarding the political implications and aligns with local priorities concerning medical access in the region.
In Wisconsin, state insurance data reveals that approximately 277,000 participants in ACA plans benefit from subsidies. These individuals face potential annual increases as high as $25,000 per household if subsidies expire. Reports indicate premium hikes exceeding double for some enrollees, impacting financial planning significantly. Some cases have seen monthly costs rise from under $100 to over $500.
Nationally, ACA marketplace sign-ups totaled 22.8 million for 2026, reflecting a decrease of 1.4 million from previous enrollment due to aid reductions. Analyses project that average premium payments could more than double for subsidized individuals without renewals. Over 20 million people accessed these supports in prior years, contributing to historic participation rates.
Van Orden was born on September 15, 1969, in Hennepin County, Minnesota. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Excelsior University and served in the United States Navy as a SEAL from 1988 to 2014, achieving the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer after five combat tours. As a Republican candidate, he secured the U.S. House seat for Wisconsin’s 3rd District in 2022 after an unsuccessful bid in 2020 and won reelection in 2024.
