City of Columbus issued the following announcement on Nov. 4
The Columbus Police Department has been made aware that scam phone calls involving the phone number of the Columbus Police Department has been occurring today. People are receiving calls displaying our phone number: (920) 623-5919, from a person saying they are an officer from our department. The caller is telling them that they have outstanding warrants that need to get resolved. We have no reports that the callers are seeking personal or financial information at this time. The Columbus Police Department does not conduct business in this manner and the calls are not related to any current activity by our Department. Please do not provide any information to these parties if you receive any of these calls.
Please do not divulge sensitive personal identifying information or financial information over the phone to these types of callers. We are aware that phone numbers are able to be “spoofed” in an attempt to misrepresent one’s identity. The Columbus Police Department is still able to receive phone calls as normal. If you receive one of these calls and are unsure about the legitimacy of the caller, please hang up and contact the City of Columbus Police Department at 920-623-5919 or Columbia County Sheriff’s Office at 608-742-4166.
