An installation by Wisconsin artists Michelle Grabner and Brad Killam is currently on display at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Carlsten Gallery. The exhibit, titled “Swept Over the Rug,” features contemporary artwork from both artists and will be available for viewing until Friday, March 7. An opening reception is scheduled for Thursday, February 6, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Michelle Grabner's work in this exhibit focuses on custodial implements, a theme that originated during her artist-in-residency experience at Kohler Co. She uses materials such as silverleaf, bronze, and porcelain to celebrate the design and function of these objects. Her approach combines material experimentation with conceptual rigor.
Brad Killam's contributions include rural landscapes that prompt reflection on personal custodial practices and responsibilities toward the environment. His work complements Grabner's through its focus on traditional genre painting and its histories. Despite differing artistic approaches, both artists emphasize art as an integral part of daily life.
Grabner holds the position of Guggenheim Fellow and Crown Family Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Killam is a professor at College of DuPage. The couple has been collaborating on various artistic projects since the 1990s.
The Edna Carlsten Art Gallery hosts local, national, and international artists while also supporting community events. It maintains a permanent collection of fine art and design works. Additionally, within the Carlsten Gallery is the Schneider Gallery which exclusively showcases student works from past to present.
Gallery hours are Tuesdays through Fridays from noon to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
