Many individuals think that maintaining a healthy diet is either too expensive or lacks taste. Lisa Miller, a registered dietitian at Aspirus Health, challenges these beliefs.
"One common misconception I hear is that eating healthy costs more," says Miller. "But when you compare the price of a bag of carrots, bananas, or apples to a bag of chips, the chips are usually more expensive."
Miller also addresses the idea that nutritious food is flavorless. "If you only eat things plain or raw, you might think healthy food is boring," she explains. "But with a little creativity, healthy meals can be both delicious and satisfying."
March 12 marks Registered Dietitian Day, which honors professionals who guide people in making informed dietary choices. On this day, Miller emphasizes three main components of a balanced diet:
- Balance: Ensuring adequate food intake is crucial, particularly for those dealing with food insecurity.
- Variety: Incorporating different proteins, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains enhances nutrition. "There are over 20 types of grains, not just wheat and corn," Miller notes. "Mixing it up can bring new flavors and nutrients into your diet."
- Moderation: Achieving long-term success involves setting realistic goals. Simple changes like replacing processed foods with whole foods and adding healthy fats such as avocado and nuts can significantly impact one's health.
Aspirus Health encourages everyone to take small steps toward healthier eating on Registered Dietitian Day.
