Aspirus Health is marking Global Recycling Day by reaffirming its dedication to sustainability. The healthcare organization is highlighting the significance of recycling in reducing environmental impact. In the United States, 292.4 million tons of waste are generated annually, with almost half ending up in landfills, as reported by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Aspirus Health's commitment to environmental responsibility is embodied in its Aspirus Sustainability Program, launched in 2018. This program has led to various initiatives across the system aimed at promoting sustainable practices. At Aspirus St. Luke’s, efforts include using compostable materials and minimizing food waste.
Lee Ann Tomczyk, Hospitality Services Manager at Aspirus St. Luke’s, emphasized the benefits of compostable products: “We use compostable products because it is a product that does not add toxics to our environment.” She added that even if all items aren't composted, they break down more safely than plastic when returned to landfills.
Tomczyk also encouraged simple recycling practices both at home and work: “You could do just simple things at home...bring your items to a recycling area.” She noted that starting with co-mingling recyclables can be an easy first step.
The Aspirus Health Sustainability Project aims for a 50% reduction in organizational emissions by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. These goals align with the White House/U.S. Department of Health & Human Services Health Care Sector Pledge made by Aspirus in 2022.
