Stroke is a major cause of disability and death in the United States, particularly affecting rural communities where timely treatment can be challenging. During Stroke Awareness Month, Aspirus Health is emphasizing the role of telestroke technology in addressing this issue by providing expert-level care closer to home.

Telestroke technology allows emergency teams to connect with neurologists via secure video conferencing, facilitating faster evaluation and treatment for stroke patients. Dr. Philip Bovet, an Emergency Medicine Physician at Aspirus Health, explained the benefits: “Telestroke gives us access to a neurologist in the Emergency Department when we want to discuss the patient's condition. We can have their consultation right away, which makes treatment quicker and more effective.”

In cases of ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot, medications like TNK can dissolve clots and restore blood flow if administered promptly. Dr. Bovet emphasized the urgency: “Every minute that goes by is 1.9 million neurons that we lose. Time is brain, so every minute counts.”

The use of telestroke enables emergency teams to act swiftly even during busy shifts and reduces the need for patient transfers to larger facilities. Dr. Bovet noted its impact: “It’s been very helpful knowing that when we have a stroke patient come in, we have the security of a neurologist who’s available on the screen right away.” He added that having advanced stroke care available in his home region is significant: “Knowing that technology like this is available here for family and friends is a great asset to have in our community.”

Recognizing stroke symptoms quickly—such as sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking, vision problems, dizziness, or severe headache—is crucial. In such cases, calling 911 immediately is advised.
