One in five adults in the United States experience mental illness each year, according to the National Alliance on Mental Health. Despite this prevalence, many individuals hesitate to seek help due to stigma, fear, or uncertainty. This May, Aspirus Health is highlighting Mental Health Awareness Month with the theme "TurnAwarenessInto Action," encouraging people to take steps toward emotional well-being.

Jessica Schaefer, a licensed clinical therapist with Aspirus Health, emphasizes the importance of emotional self-awareness as a means to improve mental well-being. She suggests that by tuning into internal cues throughout the day, individuals can address feelings like stress or overwhelm before they escalate.

“Just like we listen to our body when we are hungry, we can learn to recognize emotional signals,” Schaefer stated. “Taking a short pause or giving yourself space in the moment can prevent those emotions from building.”

Schaefer advises reflecting on current coping mechanisms and warns against pushing difficult emotions aside, as this can lead to increased stress over time. Confronting these feelings early on through personal reflection or with professional help supports long-term wellness.

“It is completely normal to feel uncertain about seeking help,” Schaefer noted. “We may never feel fully ready. But often, taking action despite the discomfort is how healing begins.”

For those supporting others, Schaefer recommends approaching with empathy and curiosity rather than offering immediate advice. She suggests asking what support the person needs since everyone experiences support differently.

In addition to seeking support, building resilience can begin with small habits such as noticing moments of gratitude or surrounding oneself with emotionally supportive people.

“This Mental Health Month, I want people to know they do not have to stay stuck,” Schaefer expressed. “Support is available, and even one small step can begin to shift things for the better.”

Aspirus Health encourages individuals feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start to contact their primary care provider as a first step. More information about behavioral health services at Aspirus Health is available at www.aspirus.org/mental-health-treatment-counseling.
