In Wausau, Wisconsin, Aspirus Health is highlighting a treatment option for arthritis in line with Arthritis Awareness Month. The healthcare provider offers low-dose radiation therapy, which has shown promise for patients who have not found relief through conventional methods such as medications or physical therapy.

Dr. Christopher Platta, a Radiation Oncologist and Medical Director of the Oncology Program at Aspirus Health, noted that "low-dose radiation therapy has been used in Europe for decades and is beginning to be used more widely in the United States." He expressed satisfaction with providing this option at Aspirus locations for those seeking additional pain relief.

The procedure involves six sessions over two to three weeks, each lasting 15 to 20 minutes per joint. It employs a fraction of the radiation dose typically used in cancer treatments. Dr. Platta emphasized that "there really is no recovery time," with minimal side effects allowing patients to resume normal activities immediately. He added that approximately 80 percent of patients report improved pain and function in affected joints.

One patient, David Biundo, shared his experience after undergoing the therapy at Aspirus following unsuccessful attempts with other treatments. Initially skeptical due to concerns about radiation intensity, Biundo found the process painless and easy. He reported significant improvement in shoulder and neck pain within weeks.

Aspirus currently provides low-dose radiation therapy at its facilities in Wausau, Stevens Point, and Antigo, with plans for further expansion. Dr. Platta pointed out that this treatment is particularly beneficial for joints that cannot be replaced surgically, such as those in the hands and feet.

Patients are encouraged to consult their doctors to determine if low-dose radiation therapy might be suitable for them.
