The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is set to host a series of planetarium shows this June at the Allen F. Blocher Planetarium. The shows will take place at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays throughout the month.
Each show, lasting about an hour, includes a 25-minute presentation focusing on the current night sky in Central Wisconsin. The events are free and open to the public, although donations are welcomed to support these programs.
The schedule kicks off on Monday, June 2, with "From Earth to the Universe," which covers celestial discovery from ancient Greek theories to modern telescopes. On Wednesday, June 4, Associate Professor Sebastian Zamfir will present "Planets of the Solar System," offering insights into celestial bodies within our solar system and beyond.
On Monday, June 9, attendees can learn more about the Sun's impact with "Sunstruck!" while Wednesday, June 11 features "Out There – The Quest for Extrasolar Worlds." This session explores diverse worlds awaiting discovery.
"Mars: The Ultimate Voyage" will be shown on Monday, June 16, highlighting what it takes for human missions beyond Earth's orbit. Following that on Wednesday, June 18 is "Supermassive Black Holes," discussing black hole formation in galaxy evolution.
An animated adventure titled "Mysteries of Your Brain" is scheduled for Monday, June 23 and is recommended for ages five to twelve and families. Wednesday, June 25 brings "The Cosmic Spectrograph," explaining how scientists study light from distant objects in space.
Finally, on Monday, June 30 attendees can explore "The Zodiac: The Moon, The Sun, and the Path of the Planets," which follows celestial movements across the starry sky.
Seating at the planetarium operates on a first-come-first-served basis with a capacity of up to 55 people. Groups larger than eight may request special showings by contacting via phone or online form; these requests incur a cost.
Located on UW-Stevens Point Science Building's second floor at 2001 Fourth Ave., Stevens Point offers parking in Lot D behind the building free after 7 p.m. and during weekends.
Public stargazing sessions will resume mid-September. More information is available at https://www.uwsp.edu/smcpa/blocher-planetarium.
