For many women, breast reduction surgery offers more than just a change in appearance. It provides relief from physical discomfort and enhances the quality of life for those experiencing chronic pain due to large breasts.

The demand for breast reduction surgery has been rising across the United States. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reported 76,031 aesthetic breast reduction procedures in 2023, marking a 7 percent increase from the previous year.

Aspirus Health is witnessing this trend with an increasing number of women seeking solutions for daily pain and limitations caused by excess breast tissue. Dr. Elizabeth Renaker-Jansen, DO, FACOS, a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon at Aspirus Health, often treats patients suffering from neck, back, and shoulder pain who have not found relief through other medical advice. “Most patients come to me because they’re dealing with daily discomfort,” said Dr. Renaker-Jansen. “They’ve often been told by their physician, chiropractor, or physical therapist that the size of their chest might be contributing to chronic pain.”

In addition to musculoskeletal issues, some women face rashes beneath the breasts and difficulties with exercise or basic movement. “Even walking, running on a treadmill, or lifting weights can become difficult when your breasts dominate your upper torso,” she explained.

During consultations, Dr. Renaker-Jansen discusses symptoms with patients and explains what the surgery entails as well as recovery expectations. Most patients resume light activities within four to six weeks post-surgery; however, complete healing may take up to twelve months.

“Patients often feel relief as soon as they wake up,” she noted. “They’re no longer feeling that constant pull on their back and shoulders. Many go on to exercise more, lose weight, and feel like themselves again.”

Dr. Renaker-Jansen advises anyone considering the procedure to schedule a consultation: “I often hear from women in their 40s, 50s or 60s who say ‘I wish I had done this 20 years ago.’ They feel so good after surgery and want that time back.”

Aspirus Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery offers surgical options aimed at alleviating physical symptoms alongside reconstruction or other medically guided procedures tailored to support health and function goals.
