Winter sports, such as hockey, skiing, and snowboarding, offer excitement but also pose risks like traumatic brain injuries (TBI), especially concussions. Dr. Joseph Benert, a Sports Medicine Physician at Aspirus St. Luke’s, emphasized the importance of awareness in preventing and managing concussions: “Understanding the risks, recognizing symptoms, and knowing what to do if you suspect a concussion can make a big difference.”

Concussions result from impacts that cause the brain to move within the skull. This movement may lead to chemical changes or damage to brain cells. When a concussion is suspected during sports activities, immediate removal from play is crucial. Dr. Benert advised against ignoring falls or hits: “It may be tempting to brush off a fall or hard hit to keep playing, but that can lead to more severe injury.”

Symptoms of concussions include headaches, dizziness, confusion, slowed thinking, and vision issues. However, these symptoms are not always immediate or obvious. Serious symptoms like loss of consciousness or persistent nausea require urgent medical attention.

The first 24 to 48 hours after a concussion should focus on rest for recovery. Gradual resumption of activities is recommended based on symptom improvement. Dr. Benert noted that light exercise could aid recovery if it does not worsen symptoms: “Sub-threshold exercise...can aid recovery as long as it doesn’t worsen symptoms.” He also highlighted the need for moderation in screen time.

Most recoveries occur within 10 to 14 days; however, children might take up to a month. Delayed symptoms such as mood changes and fatigue warrant attention.

For prolonged or worsening symptoms beyond a month, medical care is necessary. Dr. Benert encouraged advocacy for treatment options: “Don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself or your child...If you’re concerned, speak up.”

Communication with relevant parties about concussion protocols is vital according to Dr. Benert: “Parents and athletes should feel empowered to ask questions about concussion protocols and recovery plans.”

Dr. Benert concluded by affirming that prioritizing safety enhances enjoyment of winter sports: “Taking the right precautions doesn’t take away the fun...It keeps athletes healthy and ready to make the most of the season.”
