IOLA, Wis. - The Iola Winter Sports Club has been a hub for Nordic skiing and ski jumping enthusiasts for over a century. Located at E398 County Road MM in Iola, the club boasts four ski jumps, including a 60-meter jump named after Chet Krause, who contributed to its construction in 1996.
This weekend, the club will host the Iola Winter Carnival, culminating with the Central Wisconsin Ski Jumping Championship on Sunday. Details of the events are available on the club's website.
Beyond this weekend's activities, the club offers a full season of Nordic skiing and ski jumping opportunities. Day passes and memberships are available, with classes for youth and volunteers ready to assist newcomers.
Tim Corcoran, a board member, emphasized the club's historical significance: “The club has an incredible history from its founding back in 1910,” he said. He noted that this history is crucial in maintaining interest in Nordic skiing and other silent sports.
The facility includes over 20 kilometers of trails suitable for cross-country skiing as well as hiking, running, and mountain biking. A chalet and equipment rentals are also available. Local schools use these facilities to teach students skiing skills that they can later apply competitively in high school.
In addition to winter activities, the trails are open year-round. Upcoming events include a spring trail 5K race and various summer biking and running events. Part of the Ice Age Trail also runs through the club’s property.
Morgan Pease, operations manager at the club, remarked on its growth: “The club has really grown into a year-round silent sports experience,” she said. She praised the volunteers who help create an optimal environment for enjoying silent sports in Central Wisconsin.
The organization plans several more winter events regardless of snowfall conditions. Interested individuals can stay informed about upcoming activities through their website and social media channels.
