As winter weather affects the Upper Midwest, Aspirus Health is alerting residents to the heart risks associated with snow shoveling. This warning is especially relevant for those with pre-existing conditions or who are not regularly active.
Melissa Wendell, a nurse practitioner at Aspirus Cardiology, explains that "shoveling snow or even using a snowblower can be a very strenuous physical activity." For individuals with heart conditions or those who are not physically active, this activity significantly increases the workload on the heart. This can lead to elevated heart rates and blood pressure, raising the risk of a heart attack or other cardiac events.
Wendell also highlights that cold weather exacerbates these risks by causing blood vessels to constrict, which adds stress to the heart. To mitigate these effects, she recommends covering your mouth with a scarf to retain warmer air and reducing exposure to extreme cold.
Aspirus Health advises people to be vigilant for signs of cardiac distress while shoveling. Symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness should prompt immediate action. Wendell emphasizes that "if these symptoms don’t resolve quickly after stopping, it’s critical to call 911."
To ensure safer snow removal practices, Aspirus Health provides several guidelines:
- Consult your health care provider about whether snow shoveling is safe for you.
- Use lighter tools and push rather than lift the snow.
- Break tasks into smaller segments and avoid overexertion.
- Consider community resources or professional help if necessary.
Wendell notes that "many people try to clear all the snow at once, especially after large storms," but it's safer to take time and pace oneself. She suggests seeking assistance from community groups or professional services if needed.
Aspirus Health encourages everyone to prioritize safety during winter activities. More information about available heart care services can be found at https://www.aspirus.org/heart-vascular-services.
