An experiential learning initiative at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is giving students the opportunity to apply their business skills in a real-world setting. The 2025 Case in Point Business Solutions Competition, hosted by the Sentry School of Business and Economics, involves students working in teams to develop solutions for a local partner, the Central Wisconsin Food Truck Association (CWFTA).
This year, five student teams will be guided by faculty mentors as they address the challenge: “How might we identify the value proposition of CWFTA membership and design a strategy to showcase it to existing and aspiring food truck entrepreneurs in Central Wisconsin?” The final presentations are scheduled for Friday, February 28 at 10 a.m. in the Dreyfus University Center Alumni Room. A panel consisting of industry professionals and community leaders will serve as judges.
CWFTA was established in 2023 with a mission to support mobile restaurants in Central Wisconsin through partnerships, mentorship, and advocacy. Taylor Okerlund ’20 and Carolina Corral ’24, co-founders of CWFTA and co-owners of the Purple Basil food truck, will represent the client during this competition.
“We were thrilled by the students' enthusiasm, even before they knew the topic,” said Okerlund. “These students are going beyond their coursework to support a local organization and gain invaluable real-world experience.”
Kevin Neuman, head of the Sentry School of Business and Economics, remarked on the program's impact: “Our students consistently rise to the challenge, applying classroom knowledge to solve real business problems. The Case in Point competition fosters critical thinking, teamwork and professional growth, all while benefiting our local community.”
The competition offers $5,000 in prize money for distribution among participating teams. The winning team will be recognized for its creativity and strategic thinking with recommendations that could significantly influence CWFTA’s growth strategies.
Now in its second year, this competition aims to prepare students for future careers in business by engaging them with practical challenges. Previously, participants worked on boosting revenue for the Stevens Point Area Convention & Visitors Bureau through partnership programs.
