Reading plays a crucial role in a child's development, aiding language skills, cognitive function, and emotional bonding with caregivers. According to Reach Out and Read, families involved in the program are 2.5 times more likely to read with their children, enhancing school readiness and communication abilities.

Aspirus Health has joined forces with Reach Out and Read, a national initiative that provides free books during well-child visits to promote early literacy and child development. The program encourages reading as a daily routine, helping children acquire essential skills for future learning.

"Reading strengthens language development and creates meaningful connections between parents and children," said Lisa Falduto, Program Director for Reach Out and Read Wisconsin. "These early experiences play a critical role in a child’s future success."

Aspirus pediatricians integrate book distribution and literacy education into checkups to emphasize the importance of early reading. "This program makes reading a positive part of health care visits and provides books to families who might not otherwise have access," stated Dr. Joseph Novak, a pediatrician at Aspirus.

Children from birth through age five undergo rapid brain development, where regular exposure to books can significantly enhance their learning capabilities. Research indicates that children who are regularly read to show stronger literacy skills and perform better academically later on. Encouraging early reading habits is key to setting up long-term success in school and beyond.

In addition to cognitive benefits, shared reading fosters emotional security and family bonding. "The other piece that a lot of people don’t think about when reading is the bond that happens between parent and child," Falduto added. "That connection is crucial for literacy development, emotional health, and brain development."

Aspirus Health remains committed to supporting programs that enhance childhood development and promote literacy by collaborating with Reach Out and Read. This partnership aims to make books and literacy resources more accessible to families, enabling children to develop an early love for reading.
