Community Health Improvement Week, running from June 9 to 13, highlights the efforts of public health professionals and their partners in building healthier communities through collaboration and prevention. At Aspirus Health, these initiatives are ongoing, particularly through the Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA).
Conducted every three years, the CHNA helps Aspirus and its partners pinpoint key health concerns affecting their communities. The assessment process involves surveys, focus groups, and local health data collection in collaboration with public health departments and regional hospitals.
“The CHNA gives us a structured way to listen,” stated Tara Draeger, Director of System Community Health Improvement at Aspirus Health. “It helps us understand what matters most to each community and where we can have the greatest impact.”
The insights gained from the CHNA guide strategies at the hospital level that address priority issues such as mental health, chronic disease, substance use, and access to care. According to the CDC, community health assessments are vital for aligning resources and reducing health disparities.
Aspirus’ Community Health Improvement professionals implement these strategies through programs, partnerships, and policy efforts tailored to local needs. These actions reflect the system’s belief that improving health extends beyond clinical care; it relies on listening, trust, and long-term commitment.
In response to concerns about access to healthy food, for instance, Aspirus supports a fruit and vegetable voucher program in partnership with local public health and community organizations. Families who qualify receive vouchers redeemable at farmers markets and grocery stores for fresh produce while supporting local food systems.
“We want people to see that we’re not just showing up once,” Draeger noted. “We’re here to work alongside them over time.”
During Community Health Improvement Week, Aspirus encourages residents to actively shape their community's health by reviewing the CHNA. This engagement is an opportunity to understand pressing local issues and how they are being addressed.
