As summer brings more people outdoors for activities like pickleball and hiking, the risk of knee injuries rises, according to local health experts.
“Knee injuries are very common this time of year,” said Joseph Mueller, DO, orthopedic surgeon with Aspirus Health. “They’re often related to recreational activities or walking on uneven ground.”
Dr. Mueller explained that many strains and sprains can be prevented by maintaining regular movement throughout the year, as well as incorporating stretching and strength training into routines. “People forget they haven’t been as active and try to jump back in at full speed,” he said.
He also noted that footwear choices matter. While sandals and casual shoes may be popular during warmer months, they typically do not provide enough support or grip for uneven surfaces. Dr. Mueller recommends selecting athletic shoes or hiking boots that fit well to help reduce the chance of falls and joint strain.
If an injury does occur, medical advances have improved recovery options. Minimally invasive procedures combined with physical therapy can help patients heal efficiently. Staying active during recovery is important as well. “People who avoid activity because they’re afraid of pain often end up feeling worse,” Dr. Mueller said. “Regular walking and exercise can help prevent ongoing issues.”
